Shrub to 5 m (15 ft) tall. Twigs glabrous. Bark reddish-brown, smooth. Leaves sessile, 1.5-3.5 mm (0.06-0.14 in) long. Flowers in a narrow dense raceme to 7 cm (2.8 in) long, 4-merous, usually pinkish. Fruits numerous brown capsules about 3 mm (1/8 in) long.
Distribution: Infrequent but widely scattered over much of the U. S. as escapes from cultivation. Native to Eurasia.
Habitat: River flood plains, salt marshes.

Comment: Tamarix is the old Latin name; ramosissima means "most densely branched".
