Shrub to 5 m (15 ft) tall. Young twigs puberulent, becoming spinescent. Leaves alternate, compound with 5-9 leaflets, pilose, rachis winged, leaflets less than 2 cm (0.8 in) long. Flowers axillary or terminal, small, greenish, appearing before leaves. Fruits red, glandular-pubescent, about 5 mm (0.2 in) in diameter.
Distribution: Native to southwestern Oklahoma, western Texas, New Mexico, Arizona.
Habitat: Usually canyons, rocky hillsides, dry uplands.
NWI status: none
Comment: Rhus is the ancient Latin name; microphylla refers to the very small leaves.
