Wetland and Aquatic Plants of Oklahoma

Interactive Keys: Submersed

Water-milfoil (Haloragaceae)

Note: The foliage is infrequently browsed by waterfowl.  Provides excellent habitat for aquatic invertebrates and small fish.  However, some species can be invasive and care needs to be taken when planting in aquaria, ponds, and water gardens.  When trying to distinguish milfoils from mermaidweeds observe the distance separating leaf whorls (1 cm or greater parrot feather, less than for all other species).  All water-milfoils have flowers found in the leaf axils.

NWI status: Watermilfoils are considered OBL.

     1. Leaves in whorls (Myriophyllum)
     2. Leaves alternate (
Proserpinaca)
