Interactive Keys: Submersed
Pondweed
(Potamogetonaceae)
Note: The flowers
of pondweeds are highly modified into perianth segments, but are
rather nondescript. The seeds, or
achenes, are an important food for waterfowl. The
stems and foliage of some species are also eaten
by insects,
waterfowl and shorebirds, and mammals. Pondweeds
provide excellent habitat for insects and
juvenile fishes.
(See also floating leaf pondweeds.)
NWI status: Pondweeds are
considered OBL.
1. Broad leaf pondweeds (1 cm wide or
more)
2. Narrow leaf pondweeds (3 mm wide
or less, much
longer than broad)
