Climbing semi-woody vine. Stems glabrous, angled. Leaves pinnately compound. Leaflets usually 3-5, linear to broadly ovate, 2-10 cm (0.8-4 in) long and 0.3-5 cm (0.1-2 in) wide, entire or lobed. Flowers solitary and terminal on branches. Calyx cylindric below and flared above; sepals bluish, 2.5-5 cm (1-2 in) long, dilated above with wavy margins. Styles persistent, silky-hairy, 1-3 cm (0.4-1.2 in) long.
Distribution: Coastal plain from Virginia to eastern Texas and southeastern Oklahoma.
Habitat: Floodplain forests and marshes.
NWI status: FAC
Comment: Clematis is a name given by Dioscorides to some slender climbing plant; crispa refers to the wavy margins of the sepals.
