Woody or semiwoody vine climbing by tendrils at ends of short lateral branches. Leaves alternate, ovate, 5-15 cm (2-6 in) long, pointed, truncate or slightly cordate at base. Flowers small, greenish, numerous, in paniculate racemes. Fruiting calyx enlarging to 2-3 cm (0.8-1.2 in) long, pink, showy and "flowerlike", with a long flattened winglike base appearing as a winged pedicel.
Distribution: Southeastern U. S., mostly on the Coastal Plain.
Habitat: River banks, swamps, margins of floodplain forests.

Comment: Brunnichia honors Norwegian naturalist M. T. Brunnich; ovata refers to the ovate leaves.
