Baccharis halimifolia L.

    Dioecious shrub 1-3 m (3-9 ft) tall. Leaves glabrous but somewhat scurfy, elliptic to obovate, 3-7 cm (1.2-2.8 in) long and 1-4 cm (0.4-1.6 in) wide, usually coarsely serrate but sometimes entire, cunieform-petiolate. Flower heads scattered at the end of branches, forming pyramidal panicles, blooming in fall. Flowers small, yellowish, usually with purplish involucre. Fruits small achenes with white or tan pappus-bristles, persistent in flower heads into winter. Branches striate-angled.

    Distribution: Native to the Coastal Plain, Virginia to Texas.
    Habitat: Usually old fields, forest margins, and roadsides.
    NWI status: FACW-
    Comment: Baccharis is derived from the Greek name for some other plant; halimifolia refers to the resemblance of the leaves to those of Halimis.
