Shrub to 3 m (9 ft) tall. Stems brown to gray, glabrous, more or less striate. Leaves 15-20 cm (6-8 in) long. Leaflets usually 11-19, elliptic to ovate, 2.5-5 cm (1-2 in) long and 1-2.5 cm (0.4-1 in) wide, rounded or notched at apex. Inflorescence a spike 10-20 cm (4-8 in) long. Flowers numerous, small. Fruits legumes about 5 mm (0.15 in) long.
Distribution: Native to southeastern U. S.
Habitat: Banks of creeks and rivers.
NWI status: Not listed for Region 6, FAC and FACW in other regions.
Comment: Amorpha means "without form" and refers to the one-petaled flowers; nitens refers to the shiny leaves.
