Sprawling or high-climbing woody vine with few tendrils. Stems glabrous or glabrate. Leaves bipinnate or tripinnate. Leaflets ovate, coarsely serrate, about 6 cm (2.5 in) long and 4.5 cm (1.8 in) wide. Flowers small, greenish, 5-petaled, in short cymes. Fruits grapelike, blue-black, 6-10 mm (0.2-0.4 in) in diameter, with 2-5 seeds.
Distribution: About the southeastern quarter of the U. S.
Habitat: Floodplain forests, abandoned fields, roadsides.

Comment: The genus name Ampelopsis is derived from a Greek word meaning vinelike; arborea refers to the high-climbing habit.
