Oklahoma Bird Specimen Records
This database contains information on bird specimens collected in Oklahoma and housed at various museums in the state and around the world. The database does not include records currently in the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History (see link below).
Museum records in this data base include those from Cameron University (CC), University of Central Oklahoma (CSU), East Central State University (EC), Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NW), Oklahoma State University (OSU), Oklahoma Panhandle State University (PS), Southeastern Oklahoma State University (SE), Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SW), the University of Oklahoma Biological Station, and the University of Tulsa (TU). Gary Schnell and Scott Wood from the Survey gathered records from these collections between 1979 and 1981. The database also includes specimens originally deposited in the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History that were given to or exchanged with other collections throughout the world. (Please see the contact information for these collections).
The latest records in the database are from 1981.
Scientific names are based on the
online edition of the A.O.U. Check-list of North American Birds
. Changes in the scientific names from the original specimen names were made by retaining the old name, but adding the new name to the genus and/or species field in [brackets]. For example, the Carolina Chickadee, Poecile carolinensis is represented as Parus [Poecile] carolinensis. Common names were added to the file in 2000 to make the database more useable on the World Wide Web. Common names are based on the scientific name following the A.O.U. Checklist. Please read the
metadata file for more information on this database.
